Osthole is a substance extracted from the fruit of the annual herbaceous plant Ophiopogon in the Umbelliferae family. It appears as a yellow green to white crystalline powder and is insoluble in water and cold petroleum ether. It is easily soluble in acetone, methanol, ethanol, chloroform, trichloromethane, and ethyl acetate, and soluble in boiling petroleum ether.
